Welcome to
a small Russian town situated on the magnificent bank of the great Russian river Volga.
The history of Kozmodemyansk, a very beautiful town of the Republic of Mari El began in
the middle of the 16 th century. It was the Russian tsar Ivan the Terrible who ordered a
small military fortress to be built in that picturesque place. The first settlers were
archers who took part in a military trip to the Azov See uith Peter I at the head at the
end of the 17 th century. And now you can see the oldest stone monument that is
Streletskaya Chapel built in 1698 in the historical part of the town. The people of
Kozmodemyansk took part in the uprisings under the leadership of Ivan |

Bolotnikov,
Stepan Razin and Emelyan Pugachov. About 17 thousand of its citisens went to the fronts of
the World War II and only half of them came back. The celebration of Victory Day near
Glory obelisk is one of the most interesting traditions of our time.
Kozmodemyansk is famous for its museums. The Ethnografical Museum in the Open Air
is a symbolic village. You can feel the atmosphere of a difficult life of Highland Mari
people in the past and see how the local people live nowadays.
The pride of the town is its Historical museum named after A. V. Grigoryev, one of
the first Mari professional painters. Its wonderful picture gallery contains masterpieces
of pictorial art belonging to the brush of Russian and foreign painters. |

Mari people, their costumes, traditions, the nature of the Mari land attracted the
attention of the Kazan painters P. Radimov, V. Timofeyev, G. Medvedev, N. Feshin as well
as the Mari painters Z. Lavrentyev, I. Efimov, A. Grigoryev, I. Yamberdov, L. Oskin and
others.
